Millions of "dead" Social Security recipients actually caused by a COBOL coding quirk

What slays me is people don't understand you can fix something wrong in an honest, competent, and organized way.

Greatly exaggerating or outright making false claims that leads to inflamatory media headlines does not remotely contribute to solving the problem.

If there are some people improperly getting social security, just say that and work on fixing that. There is no need to make outright false claims about tens or even hundreds of millions of dead people getting social security.

If you made a mistake at your job through an honest mistake, the smart thing for the company to do would be to work with you to fix it. How would you feel if someone started claiming you intentionally made those mistakes at your job because you're trying to sabotage your company and/or trying to steal money?
How dare you question Lord Musk and King Trump. Only they can fix this. /s

Well, he openly admitted he makes mistakes all the time, but he also fixes them fast, it's always the final result that matters, and that's what we want too, fix the government waste ASAP, or we will be bankrupt in no time.
I see. A several trillion dollar national debt is not bankruptcy? Trump has a lot of experience with bankruptcy.

One would think that in the interests of continuous improvement, Musk would have learned by now that he makes mistakes and thus, would refrain from jumping to conclusions because those conclusions make good soundbites for the news.

But Nooooooooooo. Musk remains as clueless as he ever was.

This is a perfect example of how legacy technology sticks around not because it’s broken, but because replacing it is an absolute nightmare. COBOL may be old, but it still does its job—until someone tries to interpret 150-year-old placeholders as real data.

And it clearly shows a lack of expertise on the part of those "experts" interpreting the data.

Thank God these experts are on the job rooting out Government Waste.

DOGE website just rolled back all the savings they claimed and dropped the amount of savings its getting so much that its now costing us more money than we have saved.

They just secretly changed their website to cover up all the lies they were spreading.

lets talk about fraud!
Fools fooling themselves. The long arm of justice will catch up with them.

its a pure lack of not investing in tech on the government side. 20 million dollar jets but we ahve to use an ancient data system.

What slays me is that when anyone finds something obviously wrong and in need of correction in government, the first instinct is to minimize the failure and then vilify whoever brings it up.

Does it really matter if and how many 100+ year old people are getting paid? How about joining everyone else in a call to fix the problems, rather than excuse them.

The data is obviously wrong, but what is the cost to get the system corrected? According to the Social Security agency itself, the cost to modernize the COBOL system would have been $9 million years ago, and it was ultimately decided that the costs didn't exceed the benefits.

What slays me is that people read these stories with zero objectivity. If someone with an ounce of integrity was in charge of determining whether the Social Security agency needed updating, we wouldn't have these sensational stories of millions of people potentially receiving fraudulent payments. How anyone can simply trust what Elon or Trump say is beyond me.

DOGE is performing drive by layoffs, and Trump is happy to let them do so. They're firing people and making public accusations of fraud before they have a basic understanding of how these agencies and softwares work. And Republicans who don't fact check are eating it up.

Bruh. Your article would stand if the 149 years old bracket stand out in proportion. Which not only it didn't but the numbers look will like normal smooth graphic plot.
Probably there IS programming quirk of some sort but looking at it that would only explain some part, not all the numbers given.
EDIT: in general, the whole thing has been running for decades, there is no excuse to what were the previous administration doing? Keeping "corpses" in their basement?

'Explaining' it with "COBOL coding quirk" is so convenient. A nice try. There's probably some part of some problem for which that's the actual explanation.
But these guys will not stop digging because they know of the 'quirk', and all the shenanigans will be exposed.

There weren't rumors about millions of dead people receiving SS checks. There were millions of dead people not flagged as deceased on the list of SS names. There is a difference. Get it right. There was no confirmation that all those dead people were receiving any payments, it was still being looked into.

****ing media unable to report anything correctly these days and then you get sites like this doubling down on it. I'd like to say I find that surprising, but damn, we've seen how poorly media has covered anything in the past several decades.
It's obvious what Elon was doing. He went with sensational stories on how the government is paying millions of dead people.

the sad thing is we have no issues delivering billions of arms around the world but wont spend 9 million on this.

Thats 2% of the cost of one fighter jet.

We have 1,295 or so fighter jets.

Want to eliminate waste, I think I found it. One Jet at the tune of over 350 million could fix half our infrastructure...

Exactly...the issue here is it had to be known by seeing these possible recipients flagged for SS checks but no one bothered to correct the code. How many more "errors" in our government systems are there???

Lots of people on both sides of this issue do nothing but blame the other. They all listen to their respect echo chambers and never TRULY think about working together to fix these issues for the better...

The issue is Tech Debt and kicking can. Cobol, while old, is like any application and needs 15% yearly dedicated toward future and coding changes. Having been in that COBOL realm I can say our government sucks at real world efforts in tech for the common man, but war get the brightest and best. You can't finish if you don't start, so let's all agree to fix it all. You do know that our children are counting on it, folks!

Let's correct what "DOGE" has been stated to mean to what it in fact actually is: "The Department Of Government Evisceration"

The question was asked of another Republican seventy years ago, “Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?”

(Joseph N. Welch to Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, June 9, 1954, the 30th day of the Army–McCarthy hearings.)

Now, as then, the answer to that question for Trump, his sycophants, enablers and base ("base" in more ways than one) — as well as nearly every Republican office holder across the land — is a resounding, unequivocal and absolute NO.

Nor have they even a scintilla of integrity — much less empathy, not to mention actual patriotism.

For, as Dr. Johnson was famously quoted by James Boswell, “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”

Often omitted, however, is what then followed: “But let it be considered that he did not mean a real and generous love of our country, but that pretended patriotism which so many, in all ages and countries, have made a cloak of self-interest.”

— James Boswell (1740—1795)

(“Life of Samuel Johnson,” 1791; p. 253)

Ah look. More people saying a bunch of crap in both directions and having no ability to truly back those claims other then pointing to other politicians with numbers on a document that there is no way to personally verify and saying trust us bro. It never ends.

You're spot on that the issue is Tech debt. This is going to be a common theme with DOGE. They are going to find a bunch of systems that are extremely outdated, and then make it seem like the systems are causing billions in waste/fraud each year.

Unfortunately, DOGE isn't here to make the government run better; it's here to make the government run cheaper. These dated systems are going to continue aging, and no one is going to have the appetite to properly fix them. Spending millions of dollars and years of labor to fix systems isn't sexy, but mass layoffs are.

I don't know if you were specifically addressing my post, but since I was the only one to post an actual document, I am going to assume that.

There is a reason I posted that particular document. I have a close relative that worked at the higher levels for the old SIGAR IG, John F. Sopko. Neither my relative, or Sopko are politicians. Yes, they are both registered Democrats. However, like all IG's, they report to Congress to both Republicans and Democrats. There is no reason to believe the numbers in that document I linked aren't reliable. It just wouldn't make sense to fake the numbers with so many powerful people able to attack any inconsistencies. I would also like to note that during the first Trump administration, Trump could have replaced the acting IG, legally. He didn't.

So many people have this default belief that anything that comes from the government is not trustworthy. That just isn't true. The vast majority of the government is run by regular people who want our country to succeed because they live here too. Sure, they don't all agree on how to go about that, but the end-goal is the same. I am not saying everyone should blindly trust government, just that everyone shouldn't blindly distrust government.
