In brief: Amazon has introduced a generative AI-powered version of its popular Alexa digital assistant. Alexa+ is driven by large language models from Amazon Bedrock, opening up a whole new range of capabilities, and will be available to try out in the coming weeks.

According to Amazon SVP of devices and services, Panos Panay, Alexa+ can perform tasks like ordering groceries from Whole Foods or Amazon Fresh, order takeout from Uber Eats or Grubhub, remind you when tickets for your favorite band go on sale on Ticketmaster, play music from most popular streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify, or book a reservation through OpenTable.

The enhanced service can additionally perform complex, multi-step tasks. For example, if the heating element in your oven goes out and needs to be replaced, Alexa+ can use the web to access Thumbtack, find a service provider in your area, and schedule the repair on your behalf.

Alexa+ is also personalized to each user. It knows what you like to listen to, what videos you have watched, what you've bought recently and where to ship items to, and how you like to pay for purchases. Users can even have Alexa+ remember things like important dates, dietary preferences, and family recipes, and apply that knowledge to certain situations – for example, a family dinner.

Alexa+ should be compatible with most of the 600 million Alexa devices already in the wild. Users will also have access via a new mobile app that'll be available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play, as well as on the web at Alexa.com.

Alexa+ is priced at $19.99 per month, but Prime subscribers will have access for free. Look for it to start rolling out in the US over the next few weeks as part of an early access period for Echo Show 8, 10, 15, and 21 device owners. Should everything go according to plan, Amazon will make Alexa+ available in larger waves in the coming months.

Sooooo, how long until that "included with prime" perk goes away and they actually expect people to pay $20 a month for this? I use my Echo dot to check the weather, power on/off an outlet, and very occasionally set a timer. I know these new features sure won't benefit me.

I've got Google Home for things like setting timers while cooking and general look ups. Its awful compared to something that can have direct conversation with you like ChatGPT. GPT is also awful since its accuracy is much to be desired for but certainly AI assistant in the kitchen or a shed is a great use.

Also rather not support Benzos.

It's bound to happen at some point. But I think they might realise that they aren't so in demand and only reason people use their services is due to the cost effectiveness of it.

I suspect it will always be "free" with Prime but... it will start getting crippled until you pay for the "premium" version...

Kinf of like the "free" Amazon Video... it WAS totally free... but then ads started coming in... and then you get to pay to remove them... how nice of Amazon :)

I'm still waiting for an Amazon AI in my spot device (it's a clock) that understands that I just want to see the time and not joke of the day, or animal of the day or whatever cr@p it's trying to show me instead of the time. I like the voice alarm features and the personalised clock face, I just don't want to see anything else.

No cloud connected speakers or cameras are allowed in my home. If I need something from the net, I've no problem going to get it myself. The privacy tradeoff isn't remotely worth the "service" of not reading the info myself.

Free for Prime members? So basically, Amazon just made an AI butler that works for free as long as you stay in Jeff Bezos’ shopping cult.

You mean microphone or camera. Have you put a piece of tape on your TVs? I haven't, though have turned off all auto stuff. (Especially that framerate feature that makes everything look like soap opera video standard. Won't even watch a TV anywhere with that on.)
